The Senate voted to advance anti-Asian hate crimes legislation in a widely bipartisan vote on Wednesday. However, six Republican senators — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) — voted against it.
The bill, officially titled the COVID-19 Hates Crimes Act, is led by Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY). The act aims to help make it easier to publicly report pandemic-related hate crimes and would create a new position at the Justice Department to help the agency review such reports faster.
